Remove the Old Vanity

Prepare the Wall and Set the New Vanity Level

Patch any drywall damage from the old vanity. Near the backsplash area, use moisture-resistant drywall (green board). If significant moisture damage is present, inspect for mould before patching. Install the faucet into the vanity top before setting the vanity in place — it's much easier to tighten the faucet mounting nut from below when the top is off the cabinet. Secure Vanity to the Wall

Drive 3-inch screws through the vanity's back hanging rail into the studs. For floating vanities, the mounting bracket must hit studs — if studs don't land where the bracket requires, install a horizontal 2×6 backer board between two studs before hanging. For freestanding vanities, 2 screws into studs through the back rail is sufficient. Do not over-tighten if the rail is thin wood — you can crack it. Confirm the vanity is still level after tightening.

Connect the Plumbing

Wrap plumber's tape (Teflon tape) clockwise around the threads of the supply line connections before assembling. Hand-tighten, then snug with a wrench — 1/4 turn past hand-tight is sufficient for compression fittings. Do not over-tighten braided stainless lines; the ferrule seals with moderate pressure. Connect the P-trap: the trap arm goes into the wall drain stub-out, and the trap itself connects to the faucet drain tailpiece. PVC slip joints tighten by hand. Turn the angle stop valves back on slowly and watch every connection for drips. Check again 30 minutes later.

Caulk the Base to the Floor

Run a bead of 100% silicone caulk along the base of the vanity where it meets the floor. Smooth with a wet finger. Do not use latex caulk in a bathroom — it will crack and grow mould within a year. Use silicone in a colour that matches the grout or floor. Caulk the vanity top to the wall at the backsplash line as well. Allow caulk to cure for 24 hours before using the sink.
