About Us

Honest Renovation Guides for GTA Homeowners

GTA DIY Reno exists because most renovation content online is either written for American climates, stuffed with affiliate links, or vague enough to be useless. We fix that.

What We Do

We publish free, step-by-step renovation guides written specifically for Greater Toronto Area homeowners. Every guide accounts for Ontario's building code, climate (freeze-thaw cycles, humid summers, cold winters), and the local contractor and materials market.

Our guides cover interior and exterior painting, flooring, drywall, kitchens, bathrooms, basements, roofing, and seasonal maintenance. We also build free tools — like our Paint Calculator and Roofing Quote estimator — to help homeowners plan and budget before picking up the phone.

What We Don't Do

  • We don't take paid placements. No contractor or product company pays to be recommended in our guides. Recommendations are based on availability at GTA retailers, user reviews, and real-world performance in Ontario's climate.
  • We don't write for the American market. Ontario has different building codes, different climate conditions, different material prices, and different permit requirements than the US. Our guides reflect that.
  • We don't hide behind generic advice. If a task requires a permit, we say so. If something is genuinely dangerous for a first-timer, we say so. If a professional is the right call, we tell you that too.

Our Coverage Area

We focus on the Greater Toronto Area and surrounding communities: Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Markham, Richmond Hill, Vaughan, Oakville, Burlington, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, and more. Where pricing or code details vary by municipality, we note it.

Who Writes This

Alex TurnerHome Renovation Writer & GTA Homeowner

Alex has been renovating GTA homes — his own and those of family and friends — for over a decade. He started GTA DIY Reno after getting tired of YouTube tutorials shot in Arizona and blog posts that quoted US lumber prices. Every guide on this site has either been completed in a real GTA home or vetted against Ontario code and local supplier pricing.

Areas of focus: pressure-treated decks in freeze-thaw climates, paint adhesion in Ontario humidity, LVP vs. hardwood trade-offs for GTA basements, and permit navigation in the GTHA.
